Obama threatens, absent new funding from Congress, to take our army down from its 2011 high of 566,000 soldiers to 420,000 by 2019. Hagel is playing Obama's hatchet man.

Historically speaking, these Obama-Hagel cuts are incredibly large. In 2011, the defense budget represented 4.7% of total gross domestic product; this year's percentage will be 2.7%. In real dollars, U.S. defense spending will plummet from $705.6 billion to $496 billion. That represents a budget cut of approximately 30%.

Such cuts to defense spending augur very ill for maintaining the security of the United States. Historically, cutbacks in defense have fueled increases in international turmoil as America's global enemies exploit our failure of will in asserting our national interests. It has happened before, with dire consequences. As surveyed by Ben Shapiro at Breitbart:

Pre-World War II Cuts. While FDR increased government spending in virtually every other area of American life, FDR slashed defense spending from the beginning of his administration, from $752 million in 1932 to $531 million in 1934. He even cut veterans' benefits 40%. By the time of World War II, America was thoroughly unprepared to make war, with an army sized just smaller than that of Portugal, ranking 16th on the planet. That unwillingness to fund defense led both Hitler and the Japanese to believe they could make war on the United States with impunity.

Post-World War II Cuts. After World War II, during which the United States spent 43.6% of its annual GDP on defense in 1943 and 1944, spending declined dramatically – all the way down to 14.3% of the annual GDP in 1949. The era of peace and prosperity seemed that it would last forever; Harry Truman justified defense cuts by citing the end of World War II. But then the Korean War broke out, thanks in large part to the large-scale military cuts, which encouraged the Soviets and Chinese Communists toward aggression on the Korean peninsula. Truman then increased the defense budget from $9.1 billion in 1948 to $52.8 billion, a nearly six-fold increase. Again, that could have been prevented had the United States been less eager to take a machete to defense budgeting.

Vietnam War Cuts. As the United States consolidated its victory in Vietnam, Democrats in Congress, angry at the re-election of President Richard Nixon, decided to defund the military. Where defense spending had represented an average of 19.6% of GDP during the period 1967 through 1972, the budget really began falling after 1968 and the election of Richard Nixon. The result: American helicopters lifting off from our embassy in Saigon as the country fell into Communist hands. The Soviets would invade Afghanistan just a few years later, encouraged by America's obvious distaste for foreign war. Only the arrival of Ronald Reagan and his huge increases in military expenditures would change the shape of the Cold War.

Post-Soviet Defense Cuts. In 1988, the United States government spent $557.5 billion (in inflation-adjusted 2011 dollars) on national defense. That statistic slowly declined under George H.W. Bush, to $489.2 billion in 1992 – but then it collapsed under Bill Clinton, who slashed the military budget to $378.5 billion. That cut of 32% is slightly larger than the Obama-Hagel cuts, but it also took place over the course of 11 years rather than the three. The defense cuts provided a temporary economic boost, given that defense spending was siphoned into other areas of the government, decreasing overall government spending. But it also paved the way for the rise of al Qaeda – a disastrous malfeasance that led to 9/11, and the tremendous military buildup under George W. Bush, under whom military spending rose from $397.3 billion in 2000 to $701.1 billion in 2009.

Had the United States maintained defense spending levels set under Ronald Reagan, it is possible that the 9/11 attacks on U.S. soil – foreshadowed by Islamic terror attacks against American targets since the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993 – might have been deterred. The United States would not have needed to nearly double its spending on defense in a crash, "catch-up" campaign. And even if the attacks had not been prevented, America would have been significantly better prepared for the counterinsurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan than we were during the military build-up of the Bush administration.

Washington has already forgotten the lessons of history – disarmament and major defense cuts come with the cost of emboldened enemies. The cuts contemplated by Obama, Chuck Hagel and Company will only exacerbate the aggression of Red China in the South China Sea, Vladimir Putin's Russian Imperialism, and the designs for global caliphate in the Islamist Middle East. The problem with military cuts is not merely that they diminish America's capacity to defend the West and wage war against aggressors, though they surely do. The problem is that purposeful and large-scale military reductions broadcast a clarion call to the rest of the world that the United States is in retreat.

As Shapiro observes, under the Obama administration that signal is both clear and correctly interpreted. But it lies in YOUR power to compel Congress, which has the constitutional power of the purse, to resist Obama's sabotage and turn this march to ruin around!

Obama's disastrous "fundamental transformation" of our military affects each and every one of us.

Commanding Colonel John P. Petkosek, fêting media and politicians at the facility's unveiling said, "This is the place where we can be creative, where we can come up with solutions for problems that we don't even know we have yet… This is where we'll look at solutions for the future – material solutions and non-material solutions… anything from how you're going to operate in a subterranean environment to how you dismount a Humvee to avoid an IED strike."

Except this "fake city" doesn't look like Kabul or Baghdad or even Beijing. It doesn't look like ANYWHERE overseas, where one might expect our soldiers to encounter an IED strike… it looks like an American township.

Infowars reveals: "Although the site includes a mosque, the town looks American in every other way, with signs in English."

And according to Britain's Telegraph newspaper, "The subway carriages even carry the same logo as the carriages in Washington DC." So public reassurances that this facility is to provide training for foreign operations is not very persuasive.

And it comes just two years after a leaked academic study postulating the future use of the military as a peacekeeping force within the U.S. – specifically, a force to restore order to a town seized by Tea Party "insurrectionists"!

That study coincided with the leak of a U.S. Army manual detailing plans for "Civil Disturbance Operations" in which U.S. military troops are used as domestic police powers to quell riots, confiscate firearms and even kill Americans on U.S. soil.

It went so far as to include plans for "temporary" internment camps complete with internee "re-education" for the development of an "appreciation of U.S. policies."

Then there is the whole alarming gray area of Obama's "martial law" Executive Order No. 13603 – National Defense Resources Preparedness Executive Order – whereby the Executive Branch is given carte blanche authority – with NO CHECKS AND BALANCES and NO TRANSPARENCY, and so unrestricted in its scope it has been characterized as "Soviet-like" and "totalitarian" in nature by analysts!

The EO comes complete with a broader, more vague definition of "national emergency" than has ever been used previously by the federal government – and all Emperor Obama would have to do is declare said undefined "national emergency" and the government would take complete control over our lives – seizing all industry, all transport, all agriculture, all usable water, all health resources.

FORCED LABOR is even part of this totalitarian EO package, simply if deemed a "need" by Banana Republic Obama.

All these actions are a GROSS violation of the Constitution's careful separation and balance of powers. Obama CANNOT be trusted with such latitude, and his EO's combined with his purging of our military's officer corps signal a disturbing pattern. We cannot allow Obama to render a compliant military cadre loyal only to him. Such culling of our officer corps could empower a despotic, seditious cult of personality ARMED and DANGEROUS TO LIBERTY.

The danger is real. Since Barack Hussein Obama first occupied the White House, high ranking military officers have been removed from their positions at a rate that is absolutely unprecedented in our history.

Barack Obama is firing a top military officer every "8.8 days" – mostly for political reasons – according to retired U.S. Navy Commander J.D. Gordon.

"While the president circles the wagons when it comes to his ideological allies, he is quick to throw a couple hundred top military officers under the bus," says Gordon. "Mr. Obama and his team have no problems marginalizing the U.S. armed forces."

With a record number of top brass – 197, including AT LEAST A DOZEN GENERALS – already FIRED for not falling submissively in lockstep with the Obama regime and its various politically-mandated views, including a reported "litmus test" of expressed willingness to fire on American citizens, we must pound Congress to investigate the purge of our men and women in uniform.

And let's not forget, Barack Obama has already had the number of combat-ready brigades reduced to TWO… even as he commits our forces to remain in Afghanistan under terrible rules of engagement and in great policy uncertainty, abandons our allies like Israel AND cuts deals giving Iran all the funding and leeway it needs to become a nuclear power more firmly allied with the likes of Russia and China.

With only two combat-ready brigades and many of our troops deprived of resources and proper training, Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno bluntly calls the U.S. Army "dysfunctional."

"To have the Chief of Staff of the Army confess to the world that our Army has not trained for six months is highly disturbing," says former Rep. Allen West. "[It] should make us all sleep less soundly at night."

WND reports that according to retired Army Maj. Gen. Paul E. Vallely, formerly the deputy commanding general of the Pacific Command and former Fox News senior military analyst, Obama top personal advisor and radical leftist Valerie Jarrett, with her crusade for leftwing "political correctness" is to blame for the political scything of top officers…

A Vietnam Vet, Vallely says the far-left Chicago radical Jarrett has vast sway over Obama's decisions affecting top brass promotions and assignments, and her meddling is forcing senior officers to watch everything military personnel say and do to ensure PC compliance.

This assertion is backed up by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) who says of Jarrett, "She seems to have her tentacles into every issue and every topic." He says she influences from BEHIND THE SCENES nearly every policy issue and every policy decision at the White House.

The Obama administration has made crystal clear that they will do anything to sever our young troops from their heritage and attachment to the American people… including demonize our nation's patriot legacy – like the "Don't Tread On Me" Navy Jack patch – for being "rightwing" and "anti-government"!

We keep hearing about briefings and training materials, and the running of martial law scenarios designed to prepare our troops for exertion of domestic force against American civilians. We hear of elimination of our military's time-honored oaths, commitments, traditions – and also of prohibitions on freedom of association, freedom of speech, freedom of faith and political expression – even in private and family life…

Breitbart.com reports at least 197 officers have been relieved of duty for a variety of reasons, or for no stated reason at all. Most of them were the rank of colonel or above. Some who have not been fired have simply been "reassigned," again for no specific reason.

Among the most glaring examples of officers "let go":

Gen. Carter Ham was relieved as head of U.S. Africa Command after he disagreed with orders not to "stand down" in response to the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on American personnel in Benghazi, Libya. If you'll recall, Ham was then unavailable to Congress for Benghazi testimony due to retirement BEFORE he was in fact retired!

Rear Adm. Charles Gaouette, commander of Carrier Strike Group Three, was relieved of duty in October 2012 for allegedly using profanity and making "racially insensitive comments" despite being cleared of these charges later.

It also later came out that Gaouette disobeyed orders when he sent his group to assist and provide intelligence for forces ordered into action by Gen. Ham, according to IBD. Unfortunately for his career vis a vis Obama, he admitted to Congress that he could have sent planes to Benghazi.

Maj. Gen. Ralph Baker, commander of the Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, was officially fired for "alcohol use and sexual misconduct" charges though Defense officials told CNN the reason was "loss of confidence." Baker was, according to sources, also involved in some aspect of Benghazi force disposition and chain of command.

Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Charles Gurganus was terminated for questioning the "winning hearts and minds" policies that led to the "green on blue" murders of U.S. officers by Afghan recruits, reports FrontPage magazine.

Maj. Gen. Peter Fuller was relieved of his command in Afghanistan after he told a media source that Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other government officials were "isolated from reality," in direct contrast to Obama's "everything is fine" re-election narrative.

Notably, on the last day of November 2011, the Obama administration fired – very possibly illegally – 157 Air Force majors, citing budget shortfalls.

"I think they're using the opportunity of the shrinkage of the military to get rid of people that don't agree with them or not toe the party line," a senior retired general told TheBlaze.

FrontPage concluded: "Obama has made clear that he will aggressively pursue anyone who defies his agenda. Now it seems that chilling message has been sent to the military as well."

And NOW Obama has Defense Sec. Hagel put forward troop reductions proposed to the pre-WWII levels, where a disarmed and ill-equipped West nearly lost civilization to totalitarian barbarism. We cannot let our brave men and women of the military be transformed into political pawns – and certainly not into a despot's domestic enforcement gang deployed for Obama's thuggish agenda!

Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Paul Vallely believes Obama is "intentionally weakening and gutting our military and reducing us as a superpower, and anyone in the ranks who disagrees or speaks out is being purged."

"There is no doubt he (Obama) is intent on emasculating the military and will fire anyone who disagrees with him," the retired general told WND.

Then there's this:

Defense Department's Instruction 1320.08, "derogatory information" is the only reason officers can be terminated.

In other words, this regulation DOES NOT AUTHORIZE THESE POLITICAL FIRINGS!

At the same time we are also fighting Obama's ongoing social re-engineering of our troops with pro-gay, anti-Christian policies and the placing of women on the front, firing lines for the sake of "gender equality" rather than following existing federal laws. As discouraging as this situation sounds, we are FINALLY getting serious media coverage on just how far – and farther – Emperor Obama is willing to go to "transform" America's storied military into his personal agenda-enforcing fighting force.

So the next step is to take our fight to Capitol Hill and demand that Congress ACT – that the Navy Jack patches and our military personnel's liberty be vindicated and protected from political correctness, for the SEALs et al AND that the Senate put HOLDS on ALL Obama administration confirmations until there is immediate congressional inquiry into Barack Obama's military purge. There MUST NOT BE Congressional endorsement of these draconian budget and personnel cuts of our military, and there MUST BE an outside review board convened on reinstatement for these purged officers!

We need to stand up for our soldiers.
